After having 13 out of the 22 races completed, F1 headed into the summer break. With Max Verstappen leading the WDC with an 80 point lead over Charles Leclerc and Red Bull leading the WCC by 97 points ahead of Ferrari. Let’s roll the tape back and recap some aspects of this amazing season we are witnessing.

The 2022 F1 season came with all new cars (except the engines). Aiming to improve close racing and increase the action on track. The changes focused on the floor and aerodynamic concept to achieve this goal, you can read about it in this article (2022 F1 Cars: Floors) where we look at the new floor concepts.

We have seen a drastic decrease in the pace difference between teams and more competition overall. Like the gap between the front runners(Ferrari and RedBull) and the mid-field teams is less than previous seasons, the mid-field teams are all bunched up and fighting very close to each other. The drivers and teams have echoed the sentiment that the rules are working as intended; even if the step is less than expected, they are happy to move into this new era of F1 cars. The drivers when asked about their opinion were happy to say that the cars are much easier to follow in without losing too much performance, that the drop off in performance is still there but not as significant as before; where you would start losing tyre life drastically. All this means there is more action on track and more battles to look out for, which at some points till now the TV direction has missed due to the sheer number of overtakes up and down the field; which is a separate topic in itself.
