What We Learnt from Hungary

The Hungarian Grand Prix delivered a spectacular but controversial race, culminating in Oscar Piastri securing his first full win in Formula One. However, the journey to the chequered flag was far from straightforward, marked by team orders, a dramatic clash between Lewis Hamilton and
Max Verstappen, and a tension-filled battle between the McLarens.

Piastri’s triumph at the Hungarian Grand Prix was set in motion right from the start. The young Australian, starting alongside his teammate Norris, managed to seize the lead early on. His early lead was disrupted, however, by McLaren’s pit-stop strategy.

As the race unfolded, it became clear that McLaren’s strategy would be pivotal. Norris, however, held onto the lead for 20 laps, despite receiving a series of increasingly urgent messages from his race engineer, Will Joseph. The tension was palpable as Norris, understandably reluctant to give up a potential race win, delayed complying with the team’s orders. The communication over the radio shifted from polite requests to stern commands, reflecting the escalating drama on the track.

With just three laps remaining, Norris heeded the team’s directive, allowing Piastri to pass on the pit straight. Piastri then closed out the win, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

Adding to the spectacle was a late-race incident between Verstappen and Hamilton. The two old rivals collided while vying for third place, with Verstappen’s car momentarily going airborne. Despite the dramatic clash, Hamilton managed to finish third.
