Background: Who is Franco Colapinto?
Born on 27th May 2003, Franco Colapinto started karting at a young age and quickly transitioned into single-seaters, where he demonstrated considerable talent. He rose through the ranks in various international motorsport series, such as Formula Renault Eurocup, Euro Formula Open and FIA Formula 3, showing versatility across different teams and formats.
Franco Colapinto in Formula One
Franco Colapinto has shown he has a lot of promise in Formula One with Williams,
demonstrated through his performances in just three Grands Prix, particularly his eighth-place finish in Baku over seven time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. Williams made the right decision to replace Logan Sargeant with Colapinto, as seen by his ability to perform well under pressure, in addition to his speed.
Despite Colapinto’s undeniable skill, he does not currently hold a permanent seat on the grid. Williams elected for long proven success and consistency, over the short-term successes of new talent. When compared to an experienced driver like Carlos Sainz, who will take his seat at Williams next season, Colapinto does not have the leadership qualities or results just yet. However, if Williams can keep Colapinto around the sport (whether as a test or reserve driver for their team, or in a seat on the grid elsewhere), he will continue to develop and gather experience, ensuring that they don’t miss out on his potential.
Formula One results so far:
Monza: 12th
Baku: 8th (points finish)
Singapore: 11th
What’s next for Colapinto?
Due to his promising start in Formula One, many fans and journalists are calling for teams to give him a full time seat. Rumours are flying about a potential move to Audi for 2025, as this is the only unconfirmed seat for next season. Williams have been pushing for their driver to be on the grid in the future, although there has been no confirmed success.
While the future is unclear, it can be seen that Colapinto has made a name for himself despite his short time in Formula One. Whether next season, or in those following, it is clear that he is a top contender for a place on the grid in the future.
