The Qatar Sprint race delivered an electrifying spectacle at the Lusail International Circuit, with Oscar Piastri taking the win after a dramatic team reshuffle at McLaren. The event marked the final Sprint of the 2024 Formula One season and was packed with crucial moments that impacted the Constructor’s Championship standings.
Piastri Takes Victory
Oscar Piastri claimed victory in the Qatar Sprint, showcasing his exceptional race-craft and control throughout the session. Starting from third position on the grid, Piastri managed to fend off his teammate Lando Norris and despite some intra-team drama, he secured the win. Norris began the race on pole, with George Russell on the front row ahead of Piastri,
Moves at McLaren
The race wasn’t without controversy for McLaren. Lando Norris initially held the lead late in the race after starting on pole. However, on the final lap at the final corner, the positions were reversed, allowing Piastri to reclaim the win. This reversal was done seemingly independently by Norris who, having been told to finish ahead of his teammate by his team, allowed Piastri to take the lead as pay back for Piastri letting him by in Brazil. Norris has been outspoken about his dislike for team orders, and desire not to have them, which this decision reflects. Throughout the race, Norris had also given Piastri DRS to keep him ahead of George Russell, who was closing in on the Australian.
Ferrari and Mercedes Battle
Behind the top three, Carlos Sainz Charles Leclerc secured fourth and fifth places in their Ferraris. George Russell continued Mercedes’ push with a third place finish, having lost one place over the course of the race. Lewis Hamilton sandwiched the Ferraris between the Mercedes cars with his sixth place, having gained one position from where he started the race. He had quite the battle with Leclerc in the second half of the race, with the two drivers almost coming together.
Surprises in the Points
The mid-pack saw a notable performance from Nico Hulkenburg, who secured seventh place, and a point, for Haas. He drove from ninth on the grid to do this, getting valuable points for his team. Max Verstappen had a harder time in his first race as confirmed Drivers’ Champion, falling from sixth on the grid to eighth, although he still salvaged a point. He fell from his starting position back to ninth on the opening lap. His teammate, Sergio Pérez, was absent from the top eight, finishing in 20th position having started from the pit lane.
Key Moments
- Piastri’s Calm Under Pressure: The Australian’s ability to maintain composure throughout the race highlights his growing stature as a future Drivers’ Championship contender.
- Games at McLaren: The team’s late-race position switch showed their focus on long-term goals without undermining individual efforts.
- Ferrari’s Steady Pace: Leclerc and Sainz demonstrated Ferrari’s competitiveness but lacked the outright speed to challenge McLaren or for podium positions.
