The 2025 Formula One season is poised to be a thrilling year of racing filled with fresh faces, new pairings and, as expected, drama. All 20 drivers are preparing for the upcoming Australian Grand Prix opener in Melbourne after last week’s three intense days of testing where each team gathered extensive data on their 2025 challenger. Heading into this new season with plenty of shakeups, there are several talking points you should be looking out for during the year.

The Favourite for 2025

Following their resurgence to the front of the grid, their 2024 Constructors’ Championship win and impressive testing sessions in Bahrain, word around the paddock is that McLaren are the favourites for the 2025 season. It was said that McLaren could not hide their pace even if they tried. It is unclear how big the gap is between the papaya team and their rivals, but the consensus is that they are the team to beat. With a strong driver line-up that seemed to have grown confidence over the winter break, all eyes will be on them come Melbourne.

A Close Fight at the Front

Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull are believed to be quite close together, but it is hard to tell exactly who will come out on top between them. Some outlets place Mercedes and Red Bull behind McLaren with Ferrari slightly behind, while others believe Red Bull are lagging behind as the fourth fastest team. The possibility of teams sandbagging and not showing their true pace in testing leaves plenty of room for speculation and guessing for the real pecking order. We will have to wait until after the first few races to accurately assess who will lead the close fight at the front of the grid.

Hamilton & The Prancing Horse

The talk of the town, is of course, Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari. The seven-time World Champion has the opportunity to create history with the Italian legends. After receiving criticism on his switch to Ferrari from the likes of Eddie Jordan and Bernie Ecclestone who question the move, Hamilton says he is hungry, driven and winning is his number one priority. He will be up against his teammate, one of the fastest drivers of the grid, Charles Leclerc; but he will hope that they will be the duo that can bring Scuderia Ferrari back to glory.

Midfield Melee

The midfield battle in 2024 was an exciting one; Haas and Alpine battled it out for sixth place, with Alpine ultimately coming out on top. A new Haas pairing and a new Alpine pairing, while throwing in an experienced Williams duo could create a very spicy midfield fight. Carlos Sainz had the fastest time of testing across the three days, topping the charts on day two. Both Andrea Stella and Lewis Hamilton made comments about the pace of the Williams; that they were a team to watch, especially over one lap distance.

Rookies Galore

Five rookies join the Formula One grid in 2025. Six if you include Liam Lawson, who is not technically a rookie but will be competing in his rookie season in Formula One. Some rookies have been sitting on the sidelines, waiting for their turn like Jack Doohan and some have catapulted to the front to take over the seat of a superstar like Andrea Kimi Antonelli. It will be a very interesting time for each of these rookies and how they will cope during their first season in Formula One. The rumour of Jack Doohan’s seat being under pressure from new Alpine reserve driver Franco Colapinto will also be swirling around the paddock. Alpine Team Principal Oliver Oakes has attempted to cool down these rumours, although in vain. Doohan, Bearman and Lawson all have previous experience racing in Formula One, but for Bortoleto, Antonelli and Hadjar, this will be a big step up.
