The 2025 Formula One Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit showcased a commanding performance by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who secured his first victory of the season. Starting from pole position, Piastri maintained his lead throughout the race, demonstrating exceptional pace and control.

Oscar Piastri Leads McLaren 1-2 in Shanghai

Piastri converted his first Formula One pole position into victory in China with a convincing drive at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The Australian led teammate and Drivers’ Championship leader Lando Norris home for a McLaren 1-2, kickstarting his own title aspirations following a disappointing home race in Melbourne.

George Russell came home in third position to complete the podium for Mercedes. The Ferrari cars were beaten to fourth place by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, who fought back from a poor start.

Both Ferrari drivers were disqualified following FIA inspections. Car 16 (Leclerc) was below the minimum weight required (800kg) at 799kg while Car 44 (Hamilton)’s thickness of plank assembly was below the permitted minimum thickness (9mm) at 8.5mm. Together with the two drivers in Red, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was also disqualified for the same reason as the Monegasque.

Esteban Ocon claimed a brilliant fifth for Haas, ahead of today’s ‘Driver of the Day’, Kimi Antonelli. The Italian driver took some floor damage at the beginning of the race, which led to him losing a few tenths.

Alex Albon scored points for Williams in seventh, while Formula One rookie Ollie Bearman produced a great drive, taking eighth place and ensuring both Haas cars scored points. Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz rounded out the top ten, having been promoted due to disqualifications. This was Sainz first points finish of the season.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was the only non-finisher, after encountering early brake issues.

Key Highlights:

  • McLaren’s Dominance: Piastri led the race from his start on pole position, with teammate Lando Norris securing second place despite facing brake issues. This one-two finish underscores McLaren’s strong form this season.
  • Mercedes on the Podium: George Russell delivered a solid performance for Mercedes, finishing in third place. He acknowledged McLaren’s superior speed over the weekend, indicating areas for Mercedes to improve. Russell has graced the podium in both races so far this season. This result also marks the 300th podium for the British team.
  • Challenges for Other Teams: Charles Leclerc encountered early difficulties, suffering front wing damage that impacted his race. Fernando Alonso was forced to retire due to brake failure, highlighting reliability concerns for Aston Martin.
  • Notable Performances: Both VCARBs put up strong fights against their respective opponents, showcasing impressive overtaking attempts. However, the team may need to refine its strategic approach, as both Yuki Tsunoda and Isack Hadjar had to make two pit stops, forcing them to battle harder than others to regain positions. Additionally, Tsunoda’s race was compromised by front wing damage caused not by contact but by a structural issue, which led to a third pit stop and ultimately left him finishing outside the points.
