The long wait is over; it’s finally race week again! Formula 2 is back! We’re in for another double-header before the summer break – the Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix. Here’s everything you need to know:
Tracks at Polar Opposites
Spa-Francorchamps is famous for two things: the long straights and fast corners, and the unpredictable weather. On the other hand, Hungaroring lacks straights and favors tight, twisty corners and can be unforgivingly hot.
Both tracks pose different yet equally demanding challenges. For Spa, teams have to watch for rain and be ready to change to wet weather tyres. Drivers will have to manage their tyres well, especially in the middle sector. And of course, the true test is that climb up to the famous Eau Rouge and Raidillon corners.
Like Monaco, Hungaroring requires a good qualifying position, as there are fewer chances to overtake. The combination of July summer heat and the track’s numerous corners and rough asphalt can do a number on the tyres. The teams will have to time pit stops perfectly, to take advantage of overcuts and undercuts to gain position.
All in all, this double-header will provide us with some good racing, rain or shine.
A Three-Way Fight for the Driver’s Championship
After winning the feature race in Silverstone, Jak Crawford climbs up to P2 in the Drivers’ Championship. With 122 points, MP Motorsport’s Richard Verschoor holds on to the lead. Alex Dunne goes down to third after his disqualification in the British Grand Prix.
There might be a few ways for this fight to play out before the summer break:
Championship leader Verschoor can hold on to his position if he wins the feature race in Spa. The Dutch driver will definitely give his all to get that trophy, as he announced that this is his last year in Formula 2. Winning the championship can help his chances to move up to Formula 1, like previous champions Gabriel Bortoleto and Oscar Piastri did.
Alex Dunne might snag the championship lead if he pulls off a dominating performance in this double-header. The Rodin Motorsport driver must always be on the podium for the sprint and feature races. His opponents must finish outside of the podium for that lead to be truly his.
American Jak Crawford must sweep this European back-to-back for him to stake his claim on the championship with a comfortable gap.
This is, of course, not counting shake ups due to the weather, mechanical failure, or other twists that only F2 can give us.
Teams Fighting For The Top
Campos Racing, DAMS Lucas Oil, and Hitech TGR have an even closer fight for the Team’s Championship. DAMS and Hitech only have a one point gap between them with 142 and 141 points respectively.
With 153 points, the Spanish team is holding on to the lead. Drivers Pepe Martí and Arvin Lindblad’s constant good performance has helped them secure this. Now with the unpredictability Spa and Hungaroring brings, let’s see if they can stay at the top.
Early 2026 Shake Up
AIX Racing has announced that Emerson Fittipaldi Jr. will race for them in the 2026 season. The Brazilian driver is currently competing in the Eurocup-3 Championship. While it’s still unclear whose seat he will take, current drivers Joshua Dürksen and Cian Shields will definitely feel the pressure to perform well in the double-header.
Now Spa weekend – and not the typical one – is upon us. Things are definitely picking up and getting more exciting, especially with the summer break ahead and only four races left after.
