Last week, Mercedes confirmed their driver lineup for 2026, announcing that George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will continue their partnership, which began at the start of the 2025 season. This decision follows heavy speculation throughout the season about Russell’s future with the team, as well as questions about whether promoting Antonelli to Formula One too soon was the right call. While there has been no official confirmation of the length of the contracts, reports suggest that Russell has signed a multi-year deal.
The decision to extend Russell’s contract comes as no surprise. His results this season have been very impressive, with him consistently maximising the car’s potential. The British driver has achieved two victories and eight podiums so far in 2025. Many rate him as the second-best driver of the season after Verstappen. With five career wins and 23 podiums in Formula One to his name, George Russell’s talent and experience make him the right man to lead Mercedes into the future.
Amidst all the talk of Russell’s contract negotiations, Mercedes sensed an opportunity to poach Red Bull’s four-time champion and held talks to see if they could convince him to switch sides. Russell was slightly worried that he could be dropped for Verstappen if the opportunity arose to sign the Dutchman. Ultimately, however, Verstappen was set to remain with Red Bull, and Mercedes would continue with Russell. Toto Wolff has also denied claims that Max Verstappen could become George Russell’s teammate in the future.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has had a season of mixed results, ranging from his maiden podium to exiting in Q1; he has experienced both highs and lows. The teenager took sprint pole in Miami and has achieved several top-10 finishes so far. Taking Lewis Hamilton’s seat at Mercedes was always going to be tough for a rookie, and Antonelli’s rapid rise to Formula One has been widely discussed — was it too soon to bring him up to Formula One? Nevertheless, Mercedes has shown faith in their prodigy, who climbed through the ranks of their driver development programme, by rewarding him with a contract extension.
Now that Mercedes has confirmed its driver line-up for 2026, the focus will shift to developing its car in line with the new regulations. 2026 will be a significant year for the entire grid.
‘The Silver Arrows’ will be aiming to catch up with their rivals and become championship contenders, a challenge that George Russell says he is ready for. Retaining their duo will surely help Mercedes begin this new era and potentially take the ultimate prize in Formula 1.
