This weekend, drivers, teams and fans will head to the Lusail International Circuit for one of the most challenging races of the season. Since its debut in 2021, this night-time race has delivered high-speed, dynamic racing under intense floodlights.
Qatar’s exceptional heat and the circuit’s coarse surface make tyre wear a major
challenge for drivers, pushing tyre management to the top of every team’s agenda.
The long straights, heavy braking zones, precise corners and dramatic pit stops demand total focus and tactical perfection from both drivers and teams.
With the fate of the Drivers’ Championship in the balance, could the streets of Qatar decide the 2025 World Drivers’ Champion?
Looking back
In 2024, Max Verstappen won the Qatar Grand Prix, just one race after securing the 2024 WDC title in Vegas. Verstappen now returns to Lusail in the midst of another title fight, as he competes for the Drivers’ Championship once again. Can Red Bull’s star driver rise to the challenge and take a step closer to defending his title?
Verstappen was followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in second place and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in third place. While Leclerc is no longer in contention for this year’s championship, a repeat performance could be crucial for Ferrari’s battle with Red Bull for third place in the Constructors’ Championship and could disrupt the title campaigns of those still in contention.
The stakes are even higher for Piastri. Despite his dominance in the first half of the season, declining performance and disqualifications have seen Piastri drop in the ranks to joint second with Verstappen. For him, a stellar performance in Qatar this year is essential if he is to keep his championship bid alive.
The Battle ahead
As the lights go out at Lusail, all eyes will be on Lando Norris. The British McLaren driver currently leads the Drivers’ Championship by 24 points, with his teammate, Piastri, and the reigning champion, Verstappen, tied behind him on 366 points each. But here’s the catch:
If Norris earns two more points than Piastri and Verstappen, or one more point while also winning the Qatar Grand Prix, he will become the 2025 World Drivers’ Champion. This race is vital for Norris; every lap, pit stop and tyre change will matter in this crucial showdown at Lusail.
The 2025 Qatar Grand Prix will take place this weekend, from 28 to 30 November, with the race starting at 4 pm GMT at the Lusail International Circuit.
