The 2025 Formula 1 season was defined by a single colour: papaya, and while this past season will be etched into history as the year the ‘Papaya Empire’ finally came back strictly, earning them both the Constructors’ and Driver’s Championship. However, the path to glory was anything but smooth. It was a season of breathtaking engineering, a chaotic internal power struggle, and a late season technical scandal that nearly handed the title to a charging Max Verstappen.

The Return to the Summit

After a decade of rebuilding, McLaren delivered the MCL39, a car that was the undisputed class of the field from Bahrain to Abu Dhabi. The team secured their 10th Constructors’ World Championship with six rounds to spare, sealing the deal under the lights in Singapore.  Let’s review a few of the key moments that defined their season:

  • The Singapore Clincher: McLaren secured their 10th Constructors’ World Championship under the lights in Singapore, several rounds before the end of the season.
  • The 200th Win: The McLaren team earned the historic 200th victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, thus becoming the second Formula 1 team to achieve this feat after Ferrari, as they clinched a 1-2 victory.
  • The MCL39 Dominance: Contrary to the years when the team struggled with certain types of tracks, the MCL39 represented a ‘car for all seasons,’ dominating high-speed tracks such as Spa as well as the street circuits of Monaco.

Lando Norris: From Contender to Champion

For Lando Norris, 2025 was the golden season. After many years of nearly moments, he finally secured his maiden World Drivers’ Championship in a nail-biting finale at Abu Dhabi. Some key moments for the Brit:

  • Norris achieved two childhood dreams in one summer, claiming the Monaco Grand Prix and his home race at Silverstone.
  • He came into the final round, leading Max Verstappen by 12 points. Verstappen did win the race, but Norris’s third-place finish was sufficient to yield the title to him by a razor-thin margin of 2 points.

Oscar Piastri: The Star on the Rise

If 2024 was Piastri’s arrival, 2025 was his ascension. The young Australian led the championship for 15 rounds of the season and proved he is every bit as fast as his teammate.

  • The ‘Ice Man’ of Woking: Piastri revealed extraordinary calmness as he won in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Miami.
  • He reached the historic milestone of equalling the eight consecutive podiums for McLaren recorded by Ayrton Senna and Lewis Hamilton.

The Internal Power Fight: Papaya Rules

While the car was perfect, the garage was a powder keg. For much of the season, Team Principal Andrea Stella tried to let Norris and Piastri to race freely but with caution: they must avoid contact, and the team reserve the right to intervene with team orders in deciding scenarios, as we saw on Monza which ultimately caused controversy but were intended to benefit the overall title chances.

Lando Norris (Champion): Secured his maiden title with 423 points. His win at Silverstone was the emotional peal of the year, but his season was often troubled by high-pressure errors in qualifying.

Oscar Piastri (3rd Place): The Australian led the championship for 15 rounds. His consistency and eight consecutive podiums forced McLaren into difficult conversations regarding team orders, most notably during the strategy civil war at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Lost Points Ledger

  • The Silverstone Swing: A contentious penalty for Piastri at the safety car restart handed Norris the win. The points remained within the team, but the psychological rift had now grown wider.
  • The Monza Order (-3 pts for Piastri): Piastri was ordered to hand P2 back to Norris after an “accidental undercut” during a slow pitstop for the Briton.
  • The Canada Collision (-25 pts for Norris): The low point of the year came when Norris ran into the back of his teammate, creating a DNF for the championship leader and huge floor damage for Piastri.
  • The Qatar Safety Car Bungle (-7 pts for Piastri): Indecision on the pit wall during a late safety car cost Piastri a guaranteed win, dropping him to P2

The Las Vegas Disaster

The team’s lowest moment came at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. After the race both Norris and Piastri were disqualified during post-race inspection. The FIA found that the skid blocks (planks) on both cars were below the 9mm limit, a result of unexpected porpoising on the bumpy street circuit.

This technical oversight erased 30 points in a single night and transformed a comfortable lead into a desperate defensive stand for the final two rounds.

The Verstappen Resurrection

We can’t talk about McLaren’s 2025 season without talking about Max Verstappen’s incredible comeback. Having sat at 104 points behind the championship lead in August, Verstappen took all of McLaren’s errors to his favour and with a series of masterclasses to claw his way back to the championship title fight.

He won the season finale in Abu Dhabi, but despite his heroic effort, he fell just 2 points short of denying Norris the title. Verstappen’s late season comeback served as a brutal reminder that McLaren’s operation wastefulness almost cost them everything.

The Verdict

McLaren heads into 2026 as the team to beat, but 2025 was a lesson in the dangers of complacency. They had the fastest car and the best driver pairing, but their technical errors and refusal to manage their internal rivalry neatly gifted the title to Red Bull. They head into next season as champions but the narrowness of Norris’ victory serves as a warning: dominance is fragile.
