January got us ready for the “New Era”, a concept finally became a reality as the 2026 car launches and the secretive Barcelona shakedown took center stage.

The 2026 Formula 1 Launch Season Begins

The grid is taking shape. From Ford’s homecoming in Detroit with Red Bull to Audi’s formal arrival in Berlin: the aesthetic of the 2026 regulations has been made public. Although the secret Barcelona shakedown from 26 to 28 January remains closed to the media and fans, the buzz is on: Who has mastered the new active aero? Who is struggling with the initial power unit integration?

IndyCar’s Commercial Evolution

IndyCar is looking to the future. Penske Entertainment outlined an unprecedented charter membership for Honda and Chevrolet. With engine contracts set to expire, this equity-based initiative aims to retain current manufacturers while enhancing the series’ appeal to potential third parties.

What you might have missed

– Abbi Pulling, the 2024 F1 Academy champion, will be staying with Rodin for a second GB3 campaign. This is a vital step as she aims to climb the F3 ladder.

– Nick Cassidy delivered a signature “energy masterclass” in Mexico City, charging from 13th to 1st place to secure Citroën’s first victory in the series.

– Luciano Benavides made history by winning the 2026 Dakar Rally by just two seconds over Ricky Brabec. This is the narrowest margin in the event’s history after 8,000 km of racing.

– Will Power completed his first official test with Andretti Global, looking blisteringly fast in a Honda for the first time in nearly two decades.

The Reliability Gap:

During the ‘Roar Before the 24’ (Daytona testing), the new GTP Evo updates demonstrated a substantial improvement in performance, with Porsche taking the lead. However, the data shows that the top five manufacturers (Porsche, Cadillac, Acura, BMW and Lamborghini) are separated by less than 0.6 seconds in terms of long-run averages. This is shaping up to be one of the most competitive endurance seasons in modern history.

The Valkyrie Roars

Without a doubt, the emotional highlight of January was the Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar’s competitive debut at the Roar Before the 24. The sound of its high-revving V12 engine reverberating through the Daytona tri-oval offered a striking contrast to the increasingly hybrid and electric landscape of racing.

What changes are we expecting?

Cadillac’s Super Bowl strategy is changing the way Formula 1 teams approach launches. This is a shifting focus from niche “car reveals” to mainstream “cultural events”. By doing so, Cadillac is forcing established teams to reconsider their commercial value. Capturing the American zeitgeist on 8 February will be a significant achievement.

What’s Coming Next
– Jan 25-26: The 65th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
– Feb 8: Cadillac F1 Livery Reveal
– Feb 11-13: F1 Pre-Season Testing begins in Bahrain.
– March 1: IndyCar season opener at St.Petersburg.

Quote of the Month:
“Everyone is ready and very excited to start this new chapter and I am as well. It is all still a bit unknown, of course… for us as drivers it will take time to adjust initially.” — Max Verstappen, reflecting on Red Bull’s transition to their own Ford-backed power units for 2026.
