With its smooth track surface and high-speed layout, the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit rarely fails to deliver drama. The opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season was certainly no exception. From Mercedes’ dominance to rookie breakthroughs and early misfortunes for title hopefuls, here’s a recap of everything that went down at the F1 Australian Grand Prix 2026.

Your Top Ten

The top ten finishers were…

  1. George Russell
  2. Kimi Antonelli
  3. Charles Leclerc
  4. Lewis Hamilton
  5. Lando Norris
  6. Max Verstappen
  7. Ollie Bearman
  8. Arvid Lindblad
  9. Gabriel Bortoleto
  10. Pierre Gasly

A new Leader: Russell sets the Standard

Mercedes’ George Russell opened his 2026 campaign in style, flawlessly taking victory in Melbourne and securing a commanding 1-2 finish for the Silver Arrows alongside teammate Kimi Antonelli.

After finishing fourth in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, Russell has clearly cemented himself as the one to watch this season. Williams driver Carlos Sainz even named the Brit – alongside four-time World Champion Max Verstappen – as one of the main championship contenders heading into the new season.

With both of their drivers standing side-by-side on the podium this weekend, Mercedes leave Melbourne with early momentum. All eyes will now firmly rest on the team to see whether they can sustain their success at the Shanghai International Circuit next weekend.

A difficult Start (and one Non-Starter) for McLaren

Fresh off their high as 2025 Constructors’ Champions, McLaren arrived in Melbourne ready to make their mark and defend their title. Instead, the weekend proved a frustrating one that the team will hope to soon forget.

The weekend’s biggest misfortune befell Oscar Piastri. The Aussie driver was unable to start his home race and crashed whilst heading to the grid. This was later attributed to cold tyres, excessive power, and running too close to the kerb. A lethal mix that sent the car spinning into the wall.

After only managing to secure 5th place, Lando Norris faces mounting pressure as he begins the battle to defend his world championship, further than he’d like from the top of the 2026 leaderboard.

McLaren leave Australia with no podium and minimal points – far from the start they had hoped for.

Rookies on the Rise

While several experienced drivers endured problems this weekend – such as Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who retired midway through the race due to a brake issue – the sport’s younger talent once again made its presence felt.

Nearly half of the top ten consisted of drivers who debuted in the last two seasons. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli delivered a standout performance to claim second place alongside Russell, while Arvid Lindblad impressed on debut by finishing eighth and securing points in his first ever Formula 1 race.

With new talent already pushing towards the front of the grid, the 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years.

The season now moves to the Shanghai International Circuit, with the Chinese Grand Prix taking place on on Sunday 15th March at 7:00am GMT.
