Formula One is heading over to the hills of Austria and landing at the Red Bull Ring for the second European double header of the 2026 season. Almost two weeks after Lewis Hamilton took his first win in red at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, all 22 drivers will return to battle at this one-of-a-kind circuit.

A place that always promises and delivers with race action, the drivers will follow the traditional Grand Prix weekend format at the Red Bull Ring, with three Free Practice sessions followed by Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix. Although there has been no official announcement of Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities [ADUO], some teams are set to bring upgrades and changes to the track this weekend.

Championship Standings Ahead of Austria

Despite losing out on a race win in Barcelona, Mercedes has retained their lead in the World Constructors Championship standings. Sitting comfortably atop the leaderboard with 262 points, the Silver Arrows have further strengthened their lead thanks to George Russell’s second-place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix.

A resurgence in performance from Ferrari saw them secure their first race win since 2024 at the hands of Lewis Hamilton, which boosted their points to 190. Lando Norris’ second podium of 2026 contributed to McLaren’s tally, but the Woking team still trail Ferrari with 141 points.

The midfield battle for ‘best of the rest’ has unexpectedly taken a turn, with Racing Bulls taking the fight to Alpine. Currently, there are only 16 points separating the two teams, with the French outfit currently positioned ahead after a string of successful results.

In the World Drivers’ Championship standings, Kimi Antonelli maintains his position out in front as the youngest driver to ever lead the standings, despite a disappointing DNF in Barcelona. Lewis Hamilton, after surpassing his former teammate in the table, has reduced the gap between the pair to just 41 points.

The Battles at the Ring

The Red Bull Ring – the home Grand Prix for the Red Bull Racing team – is a fan-and-driver-favourite since joining the calendar in 2014. During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the Red Bull Ring held the Austrian and Styrian Grands Prix as the calendar was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The track configuration makes it one of the more unique ones on the calendar. Featuring only 10 turns, the least of any of the circuits on the current calendar, the Red Bull Ring tests the limits of driver skill and car performance at the same time.

Past races at the circuit have had iconic moments such as Lando Norris and Max Verstappen coming together in 2024, as the performance of the McLaren improved and the team emerged as a real contender. In last year’s Austrian Grand Prix, one of the defining moments of the weekend was Kimi Antonelli’s collision with Max Verstappen, which led to the Dutch driver’s first-lap retirement.

Key Storylines to Watch

Ahead of the eighth race of the season, there are rumours and discussions galore for fans to keep an eye out for as all 11 teams race with a range of points up for grabs.

As the battle at the front continues to heat up, it is no surprise that all eyes will be on Mercedes and Ferrari as they go head-to-head yet again. The Silver Arrows are undoubtedly fast, but reliability concerns may be set to change the conversation. Both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have dealt with at least one technical failure so far this season, and there’s no telling how this may impact the championship.

Although their performance in recent rounds has not been anything too remarkable, there’s no discounting the home team, who have traditionally flourished in the Styrian hills. For both Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, there could be no better place for a stand-out result than in front of their team’s home crowd this weekend.

Looking Ahead

Mercedes did not enjoy their record of being the only team to win a Grand Prix in 2026 for too long, as former Silver Arrows driver Lewis Hamilton put an end to their dominance before it had a true chance to flourish. Going into this weekend with Ferrari looking to bring a significant upgrade to their engine, there is a very real chance of Lewis Hamilton going for back-to-back race wins in Austria.

With the pressure ramping up at the top of the championship standings, only time will tell who will rise to the occasion – and who will be left behind.
