Formula 1, Formula 2 and Formula 3 all return this weekend to take to the iconic Silverstone track. With the most competitive motorsports series in the world heading to the UK, and the feeder series following close behind for three action-packed days, here’s a round-up of all the biggest headlines and stories to be aware of.
Formula 1
Hometown Heroes
There are five British drivers on the grid for the first time since 2002, giving the home fans plenty to cheer about around the circuit. With two world champions, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, and a championship hopeful in George Russell, there will no doubt be plenty of action at the front for these three drivers. Elsewhere on the grid, Oliver Bearman and 2026’s only rookie Arvid Lindblad will no doubt be giving everything to score some valuable points for their respective teams.
The Question of Reliability
Austria, like the two preceding races in Barcelona and Monaco, saw its fair-share of retirements, raising the issue of engine reliability in this new regulatory era. Whilst engine providers, particularly Mercedes, are insisting that they have a handle on their reliability issues, it remains to be seen how this new configuration will react to this circuit and its ever-changing conditions.
Who will take to the top step?
Coming into the ninth round of the championship, there’s plenty of viable contenders to take to the top step of the podium in Silverstone this time out. The Mercedes pair of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have to be the top two contenders for the race win. Fresh off the back of a second win in 2026, it would be fair to say that George Russell perhaps carries a little bit of extra momentum coming into this weekend.
However, there can be little doubt in anyone’s mind that if there is a driver on the current grid who can make magic happen around this 5.891km circuit then it is none other than Sir Lewis Hamilton. A nine-time winner at Silverstone, even the drop-off in car performance last week in Austria will not do too much to damage the former world champion’s chances of lifting that iconic golden trophy once again.
Outside the top three in the championship standings, Max Verstappen in his upgraded Red Bull cannot and should not be counted out. However, only time will tell which anthem will be played at the podium ceremony this season.
The Team Situation
For home teams McLaren, Williams and Aston Martin, the situations could not be more different in terms of their expectations arriving into Silverstone. Although the reigning World Constructors’ Champions are dealing with a drop in performance so far this season, there can be no doubt that they are still one of the fastest cars on the grid. However, for the likes of Williams and Aston Martin, the woes endured by both teams so far this season with their numerous mechanical retirements will leave them only hoping for a straightforward race. Anything additional, particularly for Williams who will be running a special livery this weekend, such as points will only be an added bonus.
Formula 2
With a smaller number compared to years gone by, this year’s Formula 2 grid only features two full-time British drivers: Cian Shields and John Bennett. Although their respective positions in the championship standings mean they most likely won’t be contending for the title this season, there can be no doubt that both drivers will be aiming to give the home crowd something extra special to cheer about.
For John Bennett, fresh from his maiden Sprint Race victory in Austria, this is an opportunity to firmly cement himself as a British racing star of the future. For both drivers, they follow in the footsteps of drivers such as Lando Norris, George Russell, Ollie Bearman and Arvid Lindblad as British drivers to once race in the series ahead of their Formula 1 promotions.
There’s no doubt that the biggest story heading into the Silverstone weekend in the Formula 2 paddock will be the brewing championship battle between Gabriele Minì and Nikola Tsolov. The pair, who are only separated by two points at the top, have placed themselves miles ahead of the rest of the grid and there can be no doubt that Silverstone will be a major swing in momentum for whoever can master the circuit for the Sprint and Feature races.
While both drivers have had their struggles so far this season with Tsolov scoring no points in Montreal and Minì collecting only six points in Monaco, momentum is no doubt on Tsolov’s side after a commanding Feature Race win last time out in Austria. With the margin as close as it is at the top, both drivers will be pushing flat-out to come ahead this weekend.
Formula 3
Despite a grid of 30 drivers, there is only one British representative on the grid in 2026 and that is none other than Freddie Slater. Racing for Trident, Slater was also signed to the Audi F1 Driver Development Programme earlier this season as the new team opened their ranks to junior drivers for the first time.
In his first full season in the series, Slater has already made a name for himself as a championship hopeful. Currently 16 points behind the championship leader Ugo Ugochukwu, there can be no doubt that the British driver will be hoping to make his home race a site for many happy memories with successful Sprint and Feature races.
