As we head into the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, let’s take a look into one of the most dramatic races of the 2017 season in Baku.
Lance Stroll
By the eighth race of the season, Lance Stroll’s eligibility to participate in Formula One was already under scrutiny. Two weeks prior, at his home race in Canada, he had at least broken his points duck, but he was due for
a strong showing to appease some of his more critical detractors. That major performance in Baku arrived just in time. For the first time, he outqualified his teammate and kept his nose clean as mayhem broke out all around him. Stroll was able to take advantage of a sequence of collisions and penalties, and he put on a very remarkable performance to keep up with the leading cars and hang onto second position until the last few meters, when Valtteri Bottas just edged him out to the finish line. Even so, Stroll’s third-place result was rather unexpected, albeit well- earned.

Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton
One of the major talking points was a confrontation between Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. Vettel, frustrated with Hamilton’s driving during a safety car period, accused Hamilton of brake-testing him. Vettel then drove alongside Hamilton and bumped into him, resulting in a penalty for Vettel. This incident intensified the championship battle between the two drivers.
Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon
The race also featured a notable clash between Force India teammates Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon. Their collision led to significant damage to both cars and further illustrated the race’s tumultuous nature.
Overall, the 2017 Baku Grand Prix was a memorable and unpredictable race, showcasing the unpredictability and excitement that Formula One can offer.
