The 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, held in Baku, saw McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claim a hard-fought victory, marking his second career win. Starting from second on the grid, Piastri took the lead after a decisive move on pole-sitter Charles Leclerc of Ferrari on lap 20. He then successfully defended his position for the remainder of the race, despite intense pressure from Leclerc and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
The race wasn’t without drama, with a significant incident occurring on the penultimate lap when Sainz collided with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, leading to a virtual safety car finish. This crash thwarted both drivers’ chances of a podium finish. Piastri’s win, combined with teammate Lando Norris’ strong performance, has placed McLaren at the top of the Constructors’ Championship standings, intensifying the battle for the championship as the season progresses Leclerc, despite leading early, had to settle for second place, continuing Ferrari’s struggle to convert poles into wins.
Perez managed to secure third place before the collision, while reigning world champion Max Verstappen had a relatively quiet race, finishing outside the podium. This race has further solidified Piastri’s rising status in Formula One, as he continues to deliver impressive results.
Williams also had a notable race, with Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon putting in solid performances. Colapinto, driving in his debut season, qualified an impressive eighth, where he finished the race. Albon, his teammate, started ninth and maintained a consistent pace, finishing within the points as well in seventh. The team’s double-points finish underscored the progress Williams has made in 2024, continuing their upward trajectory.
