As the 2024 Formula One season draws to a close, fans and teams alike prepare to bid farewell to a mix of established stars and emerging talents. This year marks a significant transition in the sport, with several drivers leaving the grid and embarking on new chapters in their careers. Let’s take a closer look at these departing drivers, their careers, and what lies ahead for them.

Valtteri Bottas: A Tenacious Competitor

After a remarkable career spanning 12 seasons, Valtteri Bottas leaves the grid having achieved 10 Grand Prix victories and finishing as the runner-up in the World Drivers’ Championship twice with Mercedes in 2019 and 2020. Bottas joined Sauber (formerly Alfa Romeo) in 2022, but with the team letting both drivers go at the end of the season, his future remains uncertain.

Rumors began to circulate that Bottas could return to Mercedes as a reserve driver, with hints that this may also open doors for him in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), where Mercedes is set to debut in 2025. His experience and track record could make him a valuable asset in endurance racing. He was confirmed as a third driver for Mercedes in Formula One last week. He will bring experience which will be useful to the team due to their young driver line up.

Zhou Guanyu: Breaking Barriers

Zhou Guanyu made history as the first Chinese driver in Formula One, earning respect within the paddock for his consistency. Despite a standout performance in Qatar that ended the team’s long pointless streak, his position for 2025 remains precarious. With Sauber’s transition to Audi, Zhou faces tough competition from younger prospects vying for a seat.

Zhou was not able to secure a seat for 2025. It is unclear where or even whether he will be racing next season.

Kevin Magnussen: Loyalty and New Ventures

After returning to Haas in 2022, Kevin Magnussen has been a loyal member of the team since 2017. However, the 2024 season marks his seventh and final year with Haas, as the team has confirmed Esteban Ocon and Ferrari Junior Driver Ollie Bearman as their drivers for 2025.

Magnussen’s future lies in BMW M Motorsport, where he will race in its LMDh programme starting in 2025. Although it remains unclear whether he will compete in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA SportsCar Championship, his transition to endurance racing signals an exciting new chapter in his career.

Franco Colapinto: Rising Talent with a Shaky Future

Franco Colapinto stepped in for Logan Sargeant halfway through the 2024 season, and has shown flashes of potential. However, with Williams confirming Carlos Sainz for 2025, Colapinto’s future is unclear. He remains part of the Williams Academy, and may continue to be mentored by the team, but whether he can secure a race seat elsewhere is uncertain.

As the curtain falls on the 2024 Formula One season, the departure of these drivers marks the end of an important chapter in Formula One. Each of them has left a permanent mark on the sport through impressive performances and resilience in the face of challenges.

While their time on the grid may be coming to an end, their contributions to motorsport will not be forgotten. With new talent rising and the sport continuing to evolve, Formula One will undoubtedly look different in the years to come. For the departing drivers, the future is filled with opportunities and the chance to inspire future generations in the world of motorsport.
