Kevin Jan Magnussen, born in 1992 and the son of former racing driver Jan Magnussen, made his Formula One debut in 2014, replacing Lewis Hamilton at McLaren.

Before Formula One

Before entering Formula One, Magnussen began his motorsport journey with karting in 2008, where he won a race and set the fastest lap in the NEZ Formula Ford Championship. That same year, he competed in other series, with the Danish Formula Ford Championship being his highlight, winning 11 out of 15 races. In 2010, he moved to Formula 3, securing a third-place finish and earning the honor of becoming McLaren’s Test Driver in 2012.

Debut season

After entering Formula One with McLaren, Magnussen secured a second-place finish in his debut race in Australia, becoming the first Dane to stand on the podium. He finished the season in 11th place with 55 points. Unfortunately, he was demoted to a Reserve Driver the following season when Fernando Alonso replaced him.

Time at Haas

Magnussen had a brief stint with Renault before joining Haas in 2017, a team most people likely associate him with, where he partnered with Romain Grosjean. He finished 14th that year, just behind his teammate. He showed significant improvement in the 2019 season by breaking into the top 10, finishing 9th, just behind Sergio Perez.

His 2019 performance was notably stronger than his teammate’s and helped Haas secure fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship; the team’s best result to date.

However, with the team’s struggles during the 2019–20 seasons, Magnussen was unable to secure a contract extension. Haas chose to replace both drivers with rookies: Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. As a result, Magnussen did not compete during the 2021 season, but made his comeback to Haas the following year, replacing Mazepin.

In the 2022 season, Magnussen secured a 5th-place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix, his first top-five result since 2019, and continued his strong performance at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. He also achieved Haas’ first-ever Pole Position at Interlagos. However, the season was marred by several DNFs for the Danish driver.

In 2023, Magnussen partnered with Nico Hülkenberg, with his best qualifying result being fourth at the Miami Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the rest of the season was challenging, as his teammate consistently outperformed him. Magnussen often finished outside the top 10, with only the Saudi Arabian, Singapore, and Miami Grands Prix seeing him finish in 10th place.

Final Season

With Magnussen’s contract set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, Formula One announced that the Danish driver would be leaving the team. By the season’s end, with no teams approaching him, it became apparent that this marked the end of his Formula One career. However, given past comebacks, there remains a possibility that the Dane could return to the sport in some capacity.

During the season, Magnussen achieved his best qualifying position of the year by securing seventh place at the Mexican Grand Prix. However, he struggled to consistently outqualify his teammate throughout the year.

With his remarkable journey in Formula One, he will undoubtedly find opportunities in other racing competitions to continue excelling.
