Talking points:

2025 is the last season with the current regulations before the new set of regulations kick in at the start of 2026, which is likely to shake things up.

Driver Pairings

With so many shakeups across the grid, many dynamics have changed within teams in the paddock. Let’s take a look at a select few driver pairings.

  • Hamilton and Leclerc have the most experience combined and are two highly rated drivers, if Ferrari deliver a good car then performances of this duo could be special and lead the Italian fit to glory. Two great competitors while at rival teams, likely to work very well together in Ferrari’s attempt to take gold. Will Leclerc, “il Predestinato” be the one to take the throne? Or will the seven-time champ break yet another record?
  • The McLaren duo were the only pairing among the top four teams that did not have a change in driver line-up. Two talented and hungry competitors who work well together may have another chance to retain the Constructors’ Championship and go a step further and clinch the Drivers’ Championship too.
  • Mighty Max is the man to beat, showing off his tenacity in 2024. There’s no doubt about his talent, but eyes will be on Liam Lawson who will join the reigning world champion in the Red Bull team. Lawson’s debut season will be an intense one, thrown into action instantly.

  • A seasoned driver in Russell, paired with the rising star Kimi Antonelli will surely be an interesting pairing. The rookie will be trying to follow the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton, aiming to hit the ground running following his swift promotion. Will the wonderkid prove he is just as good as they say he is, or will he find his first season in Formula One trickier than expected?

Team Shakeups

Aston Martin confirmed during the 2024 season that the renowned Adrian Newey would join them in 2025 as Managing Technical Partner.

There have also been shakeups internally at the team with a leadership management restructure, with Mike Krack no longer serving the role of team principal and Andy Cowell replacing him. Krack remains in the team as Chief Trackside Officer.

Haas have a completely new driver line-up for 2025. Although they were shy of points for sixth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2024, the team saw an impressive upturn after the departure of former long-time team principal Guenther Steiner at the start of last season. They will be looking to continue with more impressive performances and go a step further.

2025 Rookies

After an unchanged grid going into the 2024 season, 2025 will see several rookies join the Formula One grid.

There will surely be a lot of talk about the rookies and their performances over the course of the season; a lot of pressure for them to shine from the moment lights are out in Melbourne.

  • There will be immense pressure for Jack Doohan to prove his worth at Alpine and hit the ground running. Alpine’s recent announcement of Franco Colapinto as their reserve driver in a multi-year deal and Briatore’s praise of the Argentinian might make Doohan slightly uncomfortable with rumours that his seat for the season is not secure.
  • The F2 graduate and wonderkid Kimi Antonelli will have his debut season to back up all the praise that has been sung of his name. Pairing up with George Russell will be no easy feat, so the Italian will look to make his mark.
  • Liam Lawson may already have some Formula One experience under his belt, but his first full season will see him step up to race alongside the reigning world champion. His short stint in RB was enough to impress and give the green light for him to replace Sergio Perez. For some time, drivers in that second Red Bull seat have faced many difficulties trying to keep up with Max Verstappen; it’s Lawson’s turn to prove he is ready for the challenge.
  • Oliver Bearman, another F2 graduate, impressed the paddock at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in 2024 when stepping in the Ferrari for Carlos Sainz and scoring points on his debut. He became the first driver to score points for two different teams in his first two Grand Prix starts after securing a point when replacing Magussen at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Many expect him to be one of the top performing rookies.
