Italian wonderkid Andrea Kimi Antonelli will have the tough task of filling the seat seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton held before him. Antonelli is highly-regarded, after immediately jumping from FRECA to Formula 2, with many raving about his talent. With Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes, Toto Wolff knew he could not miss out on the opportunity to put this youngster in the vacant seat, even though others may have thought it too early.

Antonelli, born in Bologna, Italy, began karting at age seven. He was signed to Minardi Management and began impressing in different competitions, marking the start of what seemed like a bright career.

Mercedes signed Antonelli to their junior team in 2019, believing they had their own version of Verstappen in their hands. Antonelli would prove to be a perfect signing after he went on to win several championships; such as the WSK Champions Cup and the South Garda Winter Cup. He also placed second in the Italian Championship that year. In 2019, Antonelli participated in the European Karting Championship and World Karting Championship, placing third and fifth respectively in those championships.

In 2021, Antonelli moved on to junior formula categories, competing in the Italian F4 Championship, where he finished 10th (but did not take part for most of the season). The following year he took part in F4 UAE, Italian F4 once again, ADAC F4 (alongside Italian F4) and the FIA Motorsport Games. He came eighth in F4 UAE, won the Italian 4 and the ADAC 4 titles, and completed his F4 journey with a gold medal at the FIA Motorsport Games representing Italy.

Antonelli then competed in the Formula Regional Middle East and Formula Regional European championships in 2023, clinching both titles. Instead of the usual route of progressing onto FIA Formula 3, Andrea Kimi Antonelli moved up
straight to Formula 2, partnering Oliver Bearman in the Prema team. This was a tricky year for Prema, who were normally considered a top team, as they struggled to adapt to the new regulations and found themselves with an unreliable car at times. After a difficult beginning to the season, Antonelli finished sixth in the championship with two wins and three podiums.

In August 2024, Mercedes announced that they had signed the young star Antonelli on a one- year contract to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli’s Formula One experience to-date consists of two free practice sessions for Mercedes (Italian Grand Prix and Mexican Grand Prix) and he also took part in the 2024 post-season test.

All eyes will be on Antonelli come March, to see how he fares against his new teammate and how he copes in the brutal world of Formula One.
