After an absolute rollercoaster of a season opener in Australia, Formula One is heading to Shanghai for the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. If Melbourne taught us anything, this season is already shaping up to be chaotic, unpredictable, and just a little bit ridiculous in the best way possible. So what’s in store for us in China? Let’s break it down.
Shanghai is hosting the first Sprint race of the season, meaning teams and drivers have even less time to figure out their setups before things get serious. Here’s the schedule:
Teams can now change their setups between the Sprint Race and the main Qualifying session on Saturday. This provides them an opportunity to fix any set up issues before it becomes too costly.
The Circuit
One of Formula One’s most unique tracks, designed by Hermann Tilke. This place is known for its mix of tight technical sections and one of the longest straights on the calendar. The back straight goes into the hairpin, so is a hotspot for last-minute lunges and DRS drag races.
The circuit’s layout is shaped like the Chinese character “上” (Shàng), which means “above” or “to ascend.” Fitting, considering some drivers will be trying to ascend from the absolute disaster that was Australia.
Weather Forecast
Unlike Melbourne’s unpredictable weather, Shanghai is scheduled to have perfect conditions all weekend. It is warm and dry all weekend according to weather reports. Both the Sprint Race and the main Grand Prix Sunday are predicted to be in the dry.
Ones to Watch
Lando Norris won the first race of the season in Melbourne, and teammate Oscar Piastri missed out on second place after skidding off track. Both will want to get on the podium in China; Norris to continue his good form and Piastri to redeem himself.
Ferrari had a relatively rough start, although both drivers were in the points in Australia. The team will be looking to improve on last week’s performance.
Those who retired from the last race will be wanting to finish this one, and hopefully gain points for their team. This number includes four out of the six rookies, who will be even more desperate for a solid performance.
Kimi Antonelli, as the highest finishing rookie in Australia, is also one to watch. If he continues placing as he did last week he has the potential to do very well in the World Drivers’ Championship. His teammate, George Russell, also performed well and will wish to match his podium finish from Australia.
Max Verstappen drove well to secure second place in Australia. He looks to be the closest to Norris at this point, so will be looking to win in China over him.
With a Sprint race on the cards, great weather predicted, and teams out for redemption after Australia, Shanghai is set to deliver pure fireworks. Whether it’s a title fight brewing or a shock result, this weekend has everything lined up for an all-out spectacle.
