Red Bull Ring Austria

Off-track, the Red Bull Ring delivers one of the most scenic and passionate experiences of the year. The Styrian hills provide a spectacular backdrop, and the circuit is known for its incredible fan zones, camping culture, and accessibility from major European cities. Orange Verstappen fans will once again fill the grandstands, but with more teams now fighting at the front, expect a more evenly matched on-track battle.

Weather Conditions: Sun, Heat & a Chance of Rain

Weather is expected to play a subtle yet potentially decisive role across the Austrian Grand Prix weekend:

  • FP1 (Friday, 1:30 PM): Expect mildly warm conditions around 23°C, with rising temperatures and 50% humidity. Light winds and a 17% chance of light rain could slightly impact early data gathering during this session.
  • FP2 (Friday, 5:00 PM): Clear skies and sunny, with temperatures reaching 25°C will dominate this session. No rain is expected. The low humidity (40%), and light winds are ideal for race simulations.
  • FP3 (Saturday, 12:30 PM): Again, conditions are predicted to be clear and stable at 25°C; perfect for fine-tuning setups before qualifying.
  • Qualifying (Saturday, 4:00 PM): The heat peaks at around 28°C, with full sunshine. Tyre temperature management could become a key factor.
  • Race (Sunday, 3:00 PM): Forecasts show a 41% chance of rain, with temperatures climbing to 29°C for the race action. This hot-and-wet combination could create a strategic headache for teams, especially with tyre choices and changing grip levels.

Rookies in FP1: Beganovic & Dunne Step In

The Austrian Grand Prix weekend will also feature two rookie drivers taking part in Free Practice 1, as teams fulfill their mandatory young driver running. Dino Beganovic will replace Charles Leclerc at Ferrari. A member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, the Swedish driver currently races in F2 with Hitech and already made his Formula One debut earlier this year during FP1 in Bahrain. This appearance means Ferrari has now completed two of its four required rookie sessions using Leclerc’s car. The remaining two will need to take place with Lewis Hamilton’s car.
Elsewhere, Alexander Dunne will take over Lando Norris’s McLaren. Currently competing in F2 with Rodin Motorsport, Dunne joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme in 2024. Notably, he becomes the first Irish driver to take the wheel of a Formula 1 car in 43 years. Eddie Irvine, also Irish, raced under a British license.

Major Upgrades from Ferrari and Red Bull

Two of the top teams, Ferrari and Red Bull, are bringing significant upgrades to Spielberg as the development race intensifies. Ferrari is set to debut a revised rear-end geometry and a new floor aimed at improving traction and tyre degradation. Red Bull, racing on home soil, will introduce upgrades to the floor, front suspension, and aerodynamic components. While designed with Silverstone in mind, some of these parts may already be in play for Austria. These technical changes could play a decisive role in reshaping the performance order, especially as McLaren continues his dominance.

Championship Momentum Shifts

With the 2025 season almost halfway, the Austrian Grand Prix arrives at a critical point in both title fights. Oscar Piastri, who keeps showing consistency weekend in and weekend out, continues to be the favourite for the races ahead. He still leads the Drivers’ Championship standings. His teammate, Lando Norris, may also be in the mix. Max Verstappen, with four wins at the Red Bull Ring, can never be taken out of the equation. Mercedes, buoyed by George Russell’s shock win in Canada, will look to build momentum, although inconsistency remains a concern.

Who do you think will take the victory in Austria? Will McLaren continue to dominate? Or will we get a surprise from a team further back in the standings?
