Yesterday news broke that Red Bull had sacked their team principle of 20 years, Christian Horner. This came as quite a shock to the Formula One community despite Red Bull’s recent lack of form and investigations into the ex-boss following allegations by an employee against him. His departure was discussed on social media by both the team management and Horner himself, who wrote that he was sad to leave the set up after so many years there. In Horner’s place, the Red Bull team have appointed Laurent Mekies, who has previously the team principle of the VCARB (Racing Bulls) team.
It seems, with this, that an era of Red Bull is coming to an end. There is much debate circulating currently as to whether Horner’s departure is indicative of a shift in the team, with many asking if it could point towards Max Verstappen also leaving the team soon. There have been rumours for weeks, starting before Horner’s sacking, of the reigning champion looking into moving teams, with it being reported that he had entered talks with the Mercedes team. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until 2028 and has not indicated desire to leave the team openly.
Only time will tell if this will affect Red Bull’s performance. With no races until 27th July, when the Belgian Grand Prix takes place, can Red Bull begin to rebuild before the summer break gets under way?
