This weekend, drivers, teams and fans will head to the iconic Yas Marina Circuit for
the season-ending showdown of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship. Since its
redesign in 2021, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has produced fast, flowing racing and
dramatic championship conclusions under the floodlights of Yas Island.
Abu Dhabi’s smooth asphalt, high-speed chicanes and long straights require both
precision and control. Tyre degradation is lower than at many venues, yet strategy
remains critical because track position can determine the outcome, and a well-timed
pit stop can be decisive. With the Drivers’ Championship finely poised, Yas Marina
now stands as the venue where the 2025 World Champion will finally be decided.
One Final Race: Three Drivers, One Championship
For the first time in fifteen years, Formula 1 arrives at its final round with three drivers
still in contention for the World Drivers’ Championship. They are separated by only
sixteen points with one race to go, creating a scenario few predicted at the start of
the season and setting up one of the most compelling finales in recent memory.
Championship leader Lando Norris returns to Abu Dhabi one year after winning the
2024 Grand Prix. Max Verstappen sits on 396 points, while Oscar Piastri is just behind with 392, meaning both are within striking distance of the title. With so little separating the trio, every lap and pit stop will be decisive.
Looking Back
In 2024, Norris produced one of his strongest performances to take victory at Yas
Marina. That win also secured McLaren’s first-ever Constructors’ Championship in
26 years, marking a historic achievement for the team. The rest of the podium
featured Carlos Sainz in second and Charles Leclerc in third. While neither Sainz nor
Leclerc is part of the 2025 title fight, their strong performances at this circuit remain
relevant, particularly for teams contending the Constructors’ Championship.
For Piastri, the stakes could not be higher. After a dominant first half of the season, a
dip in form has left him trailing Verstappen by four points. A near-flawless performance will be required to keep his championship hopes alive.
Verstappen enters Abu Dhabi with the opportunity to claim a title that for much of the year did not appear likely. Should he succeed, it would mark one of the most
remarkable late-season recoveries in modern Formula 1.
The Battle Ahead
As the lights go out at Yas Marina, the pressure will be immense. Norris knows
exactly what he must do:
- Secure at least a podium and he becomes the 2025 World Drivers’ Champion.
Every lap, every tyre call, and every pit stop will carry championship significance.
Verstappen, the reigning champion, will be fighting to defend his crown. Piastri will
be pushing for the most important victory of his career. Norris will be aiming to
secure his first world title.
All Eyes On Abu Dhabi
The 2025 season has been defined by speed, innovation and fierce competition.
Everything now rests on a single evening at Yas Marina. McLaren has been a central
force throughout the year, with Norris and Piastri regularly competing at the front.
Their combined efforts have kept the team involved in both championship fights until the very end.
Opposing them is Verstappen, leading Red Bull Racing and Red Bull Technology
with characteristic precision and determination. A multiple World Champion, he
remains one of the most formidable competitors on the grid and consistently raises
the standard of those around him.
One final race remains and one final opportunity to shape the outcome of the
season. The stage is set, and the tension is real. As Formula 1 approaches the final
chapter of 2025, the sport prepares to celebrate the intensity and competitive spirit
that define its greatest moments.
The 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will take place from 5- 7 December, with the race
starting at 1 pm GMT. The championship will conclude under the lights of Yas
Marina.
