The Race Everyone’s Still Debating
Over the past few seasons, a clear pattern has emerged in Formula E: winning the Mexico City ePrix often seems to lead to championship success. In fact, the last three champions were all victorious in Mexico earlier in their title-winning campaigns.
With Nick Cassidy winning the 2026 Mexico City ePrix, fans are once again asking the same question: Is victory in Mexico a myth or the first step toward becoming world champion?
Can a Mexico Victory Lead to a Championship Run?
Recent history suggests that success in Mexico can be a strong indicator of a title-winning season.
The past three champions all won the Mexico City ePrix in their championship years:
- Season 9 (2022–23): Jake Dennis
- Season 10 (2023–24): Pascal Wehrlein
- Season 11 (2024–25): Oliver Rowland
Going further back, Lucas di Grassi also won the Mexico ePrix in Season 3 before going on to claim the championship. However, not every winner in Mexico has lifted the title. Several drivers have won in Mexico but failed to convert that success into a championship.

Champions Who Won in Mexico
These drivers won the Mexico City ePrix and went on to become world champions in the same season:
- Season 3 (2016–17): Lucas di Grassi – Champion
- Season 9 (2022–23): Jake Dennis – Champion
- Season 10 (2023–24): Pascal Wehrlein – Champion
- Season 11 (2024–25): Oliver Rowland – Champion
Notably, both di Grassi and Wehrlein have won in Mexico twice. However, only one of those wins in each case resulted in a championship.
- Di Grassi won in 2019 but finished third overall.
- Wehrlein won in 2022 but finished tenth.
This shows that a Mexico victory helps—but does not guarantee—title success.

Drivers Who Won in Mexico but Missed the Championship
Several race winners have fallen short of the championship despite their success in Mexico:
- 2016: Jérôme d’Ambrosio – Finished 5th
(Di Grassi was disqualified for an underweight car) - 2018: Daniel Abt – Finished 5th
- 2019: Lucas di Grassi – Finished 3rd
- 2020: Mitch Evans – Finished 7th
- 2022: Pascal Wehrlein – Finished 10th
These examples highlight how unpredictable a Formula E season can be, even after an early victory.
Mexico City ePrix Winners by Year
| Year | Winner | Champion That Season? |
| 2016 | Jérôme d’Ambrosio | No |
| 2017 | Lucas di Grassi | Yes |
| 2018 | Daniel Abt | No |
| 2019 | Lucas di Grassi | No |

So, Myth or Path to Glory?
While winning the Mexico City ePrix does not guarantee a championship, recent seasons suggest it can be a powerful early indicator of title potential. With three consecutive champions starting their title runs in Mexico, and Nick Cassidy now leading the standings after his 2026 victory, the pattern may be continuing. Only time will tell whether Cassidy can turn his Mexico triumph into a championship.
