Wherlein rules round 12
If anyone doubted whether Pascal Wehrlein could successfully deliver under extreme pressure, Saturday put those questions to bed. Despite coming off a three-race streak without points, the Porsche driver claimed the top step of the podium by converting a brilliant pole position into a dominant victory.
Wehrlein achieved his 10th success in Formula E by playing the long game, showing just how much pace the Porsche had under the rain. By perfectly managing his Pit Boost cycle and nailing the restart, he crossed the line 1.6 seconds clear of the field, bringing the spark back to the already tight championship race.
The championship is reopened
The biggest storyline leaving Shanghai is how drastically the Drivers’ Championship has tightened at the top. With his performance on Saturday, Pascal Wehrlein reclaimed the second spot in the standings, 4 points behind leader Mitch Evans. Starting on the front row alongside the German, Evans struggled for pace and tumbled down to finish 8th, watching his lead inevitably shrink.
Sunday saw the biggest twist in the title fight. A technical issue prevented Evans from starting the race, leaving the weekend with a heartbreak. With Wehrlein capitalizing on Evans’ absence, the championship momentum has swung in Porsche’s favor heading into Tokyo.
Unsung heroes and unexpected results in Shanghai
The Shanghai weekend proved once again just how full of surprises Formula E races can be.
Lucas Di Grassi’s performance on Sunday is one of many records. Driving for Lola Yamaha ABT, the 41-year-old Brazilian took a monumental victory. In doing so, he extended his own record as the series’ oldest race winner and podium finisher, marking the first-ever Formula E victory for the Lola brand.
Andretti continues their positive trend with another good weekend. Jake Dennis and Felipe Drugovich executed perfect teamwork to lock down 3rd and 4th place on Saturday, while on Sunday, Drugovich secured his maiden Formula E pole position, helping lift the team to 3rd place in the Teams’ Championship.
A success came from Envision Racing, who celebrated a brilliant weekend. Joel Eriksson scored his first-ever career Formula E podium with a 3rd-place finish on Sunday. On another note, Mahindra’s Nyck de Vries executed an incredible recovery drive Saturday. The Ducthman sliced through the field from 16th on the grid to finish an impressive 5th.
