Through special wild card entries, F1 Academy gives emerging talents the opportunity to join the grid, gain valuable exposure, and compete at a high level of motorsport.
The opportunities offered by F1 Academy are not limited to earning a permanent place on the grid. At certain events, the championship reserves a seat for a local driver, allowing her to compete during a race weekend. In doing so, F1 Academy promotes local talent while showcasing potential candidates for future full-time seats throught Wild Cards.
The Introduction of Wild Cards
The second season of F1 Academy introduced the concept of wild cards: an opportunity offered to one local driver at each round of the calendar. It consists of a one-off invitation to compete during a single race weekend. It gives the driver the chance to demonstrate her abilities on track and experience the category before going full-time.
During the first season in which the system was implemented, six wild card entries were awarded. All of them competed under the Prema banner, with the team fielding a fourth car specifically for these drivers. The initiative quickly proved successful, as four of those six drivers secured full-time seats for the 2025 season.
The following year, another six drivers were given the opportunity to compete as wild cards, this time with Hitech. In addition to gaining valuable experience, they were also eligible to score points for both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships.
This Season Seats
Across the first three rounds of this season, the championship has once again featured a dedicated wild card entry. From the season opener through last weekend, Shi Wei competed in Shanghai with the support of Juss Sports, making her second appearance as a wild card. After her, Autumn Fisher in Montreal was backed by Standard Chartered, and Chiara Bättig at Silverstone with the support of Wella Professionals. The next driver set to join the grid is Zoe Florescu in Zandvoort with the backing of Dirt is Good.
Thanks to this initiative, numerous drivers have had the opportunity to race on new circuits. Moreover, they got to xperience the demands of an international championship, and put themselves in the spotlight of F1 Academy. The wild card seat has become a gateway for emerging talent, giving promising young drivers the chance to take the next step in their motorsport careers.
