As the 2026 Indycar season moves beyond the halfway stage, attention is beginning to shift towards the driver market. There have been several major moves already, while speculation continues to surround many of the remaining seats on the 2027 grid. With Scott Dixon ending one of the longest partnerships in IndyCar history, Arrow McLaren rebuilding its lineup and several experienced drivers yet to confirm their futures, this year’s silly season is already proving to be one of the busiest in recent memory.
Arrow McLaren’s Major Shake-up
The biggest announcement so far came from Arrow McLaren, who confirmed a completely new look for the 2027 season. Pato O’Ward will remain with the team after signing a multi-year contract extension, while six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon joins from Chip Ganassi Racing. Felix Rosenqvist also returns to the team after two seasons with Meyer Shank Racing, completing an experienced three-car lineup. The announcement also confirmed that Christian Lundgaard and Nolan Siegel will both leave Arrow McLaren when the 2026 season concludes. The move represents one of the biggest driver changes in recent IndyCar history and leaves several high-profile drivers searching for new opportunities.
Dixon Brings an End to an Era
Scott Dixon’s decision to leave Chip Ganassi Racing brings an end to a remarkable 24-year partnership. During his time with Ganassi, Dixon established himself as one of the greatest drivers in the series, winning six championships, the Indianapolis 500 and more than 60 races. His move to Arrow McLaren leaves one of the most sought-after seats in the paddock heading into 2027. Who fills that seat remains one of the biggest unanswered questions of the silly season.
Meyer Shank Racing Searching for a Replacement
Felix Rosenqvist’s departure means MSR enters the market looking for a second full-time driver alongside Marcus Armstrong, who is already confirmed to remain with the team for 2027. One of the strongest rumours links rookie Caio Collet with the seat after reports suggested discussions have already taken place.
Rinus VeeKay has been linked with MSR, while Honda-backed Super Formula driver Kakunoshin Ohta has emerged as another possible candidate. Ohta has ties with the team through its IMSA programme, and if he wins the Super Formula title, Honda could look to promote him into IndyCar. Away from IndyCar, Meyer Shank Racing confirmed reigning FIA WEC champion Kevin Estre will join their IMSA programme in 2027.
Where Could Christian Lundgaard Go?
Following confirmation of his Arrow McLaren exit, Christian Lundgaard has quickly become one of the biggest free agents available. The Dane has attracted interest from several teams, with Chip Ganassi Racing, Meyer Shank Racing and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing all emerging as possible destinations. While there’s no confirmation yet, Lundgaard’s next move will be one of the key stories to watch.
Marcus Ericsson’s Future Remains Unclear
Marcus Ericsson is another experienced driver whose future is still uncertain. Although staying at Andretti Global remains the most likely outcome, rumours suggest both Meyer Shank Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing could become options should the Swede decide to move elsewhere. With Ganassi searching for a replacement for Scott Dixon, Ericsson’s experience makes him one of several names linked to the seat.
Honda Could Bring Tsunoda to IndyCar
One of the more surprising rumours involves former Formula One driver Yuki Tsunoda. Reports suggest Honda is exploring ways to keep the Japanese driver within its programme should he leave Formula One. A Honda-backed seat at Dale Coyne Racing would be the most likely destination. A possible option would be Meyer Shank Racing, although the reports remain purely speculative.
Hauger, Nasr and Other Drivers to Watch
Dennis Hauger has also become an interesting name to follow. Rumours suggest Andretti Global has given permission to the reigning Indy NXT champion to explore opportunities away from the team. Dale Coyne Racing and Meyer Shank Racing are among the teams linked with the Norwegian.
Meanwhile, two-time IMSA champion Felipe Nasr continues to make no secret of his desire to race in IndyCar. The Brazilian has shared he would welcome an opportunity with Penske after acting as reserve driver this season.
Elsewhere, rumours link Rinus VeeKay with Meyer Shank Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing and AJ Foyt Racing, while Santino Ferrucci could remain with AJ Foyt or potentially move to either Juncos Hollinger Racing or Dale Coyne Racing.
Romain Grosjean, Nolan Siegel, Conor Daly, Linus Lundqvist, Enzo Fittipaldi and several Indy NXT graduates also continue to feature in paddock speculation as teams begin evaluating their options for next season.
Caio Collet has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Felix Rosenqvist at Meyer Shank Racing for 2027. The Brazilian rookie has impressed during his debut season, with reports suggesting MSR has already held talks with the AJ Foyt driver. Although there is no confirmation yet, Collet remains one of the favourites for the vacant seat.
Plenty still to be decided
Although there were already many several blockbuster announcements, the 2026 IndyCar silly season is far from over. Chip Ganassi Racing still has one of the biggest vacancies on the grid, Meyer Shank Racing continues its search for Rosenqvist’s replacement and Christian Lundgaard remains one of the hottest properties on the market. With numerous contracts still to be signed and fresh rumours emerging almost every race weekend, expect plenty more movement before the 2027 IndyCar grid is finally confirmed.
