The Formula 1 paddock is rarely quiet, and as the teams set up camp at the Red Bull Ring, a major piece of the 2027 grid puzzle seems to have fallen into place. According to a report from Corriere della Sera, Mercedes has put an end to speculations about their first driver seat. George Russell is set to stay with the Silver Arrows through 2027, ensuring continuity together with his teammate.

While the team is yet to issue a statement, rumors suggest an announcement could land in the upcoming race weekend. This development would effectively reshape the driver market for next year, shutting down the much speculated Verstappen to Mercedes move.

Russell’s performance clause

Russell’s contract includes a performance clause that guarantees a renewal, so this deal is definitely not a result of frantic negotiation efforts. The British driver himself hinted at this dynamic previously, mentioning that his future was largely in his own hands. He noted that a specific clause existed in his paperwork: if he met predefined performance targets in the first half of the season, the extension for 2027 would trigger automatically.

With Mercedes enjoying an incredibly strong campaign so far this year, Russell has clearly hit those benchmarks. So far, Russell has achieved a win at the season opener in Melbourne, three podiums, and three pole positions. With this decision, Toto Wolff is signaling total confidence in the British driver’s ability to lead the Silver Arrows alongside their rising star, Kimi Antonelli.

The Verstappen Door Closes

Arguably, the biggest ripple effect of Russell’s confirmation is what it means for the rest of the grid, specifically for Max Verstappen. There’s been much speculation around Toto Wolff’s public admiration for Verstappen, and his not-so-secret wish to sign the Dutchman to Mercedes if his relationship with Red Bull Racing were to fracture. On Verstappen’s side, his complex contract clauses could theoretically open windows for a departure, if performance or team stability shifted considerably.

However, with both current drivers now locked into their seats, Mercedes wisely prioritizes stability and consistency over a potentially disruptive market move. This narrows down Verstappen’s options significantly should he choose to leave Red Bull and the sport altogether, likely binding his immediate future to Milton Keynes.
