One thing’s for sure; the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season has plenty to offer. The opening 11 races have already produced an intriguing championship race, with Mercedes establishing themselves as the team to beat, and Kimi Antonelli emerging as a genuine title contender. Lewis Hamilton has also put himself firmly into the fight with Ferrari, while McLaren have struggled to replicate the dominance that earned them both championships last season. With 12 races still to come, there is plenty of opportunity for the current order to change.
Antonelli at an Advantage
Kimi Antonelli enters the second half of the season as the man everyone is chasing. The Mercedes driver has taken six victories and built a 50 point advantage over Hamilton, an impressive achievement in only his second Formula 1 season. However, leading the championship brings the young driver overwhelming pressure. Every mistake now matters more, and the drivers behind him will be looking for any opportunity to close the gap. Thus far, he has managed it well. Mercedes also have George Russell, who has shown that he is capable of winning in the same car. Russell started the season on a high and has since struggled to keep up with his teammate. But Russell can return to being a genuine title contender if things go his way this second half of the season, and then the team could face a difficult decision over how freely the two drivers are allowed to race. Either way, Mercedes will provide us with thrilling race up to the finale.
Hamilton’s Opportunity
Could he get an eighth? Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was always going to attract enormous attention, and 2026 has already given him an opportunity to challenge for another World Championship. He sits second in the standings, and has the experience required to deal with a long title fight. Ferrari’s biggest challenge will be consistency, or rather their lack thereof. They have shown enough pace to challenge Mercedes, but need to do it regularly if Hamilton is going to overturn Antonelli’s advantage. Charles Leclerc may also be an important part of this fight. If Ferrari can keep both drivers near the front, they could take valuable points away from Mercedes while Hamilton attacks the championship lead.
McLaren Race to Recover
For the reigning champions, the first half of 2026 has been a terrible disappointment. McLaren started the season with Lando Norris as the reigning Drivers’ Champion, and themselves as the reigning Constructors’ Champions, but they have spent much of this year chasing. Norris’ victory in Hungary, before the summer break, might provide the momentum they need. Twelve races remain, giving the team time to develop the car and to further understand the new regulations. A comeback will be difficult, but McLaren will want to prove that their success in 2025 was not simply a short-lived spell.
Verstappen is Never a Write-Off
Max Verstappen is driver who should not be left out of any championship conversation. While Red Bull have struggled to match Mercedes under the new regulations, leaving him much further down the standings than we are used to seeing, we should not count him out. The championship deficit is substantial, but there is still time for things to change. Verstappen has repeatedly shown that he can produce exceptional results when given the opportunity, so a successful upgrade could quickly make him a contender again. His title chances may be slim, but the second half could still become a fightback rather than a write-off.
The Development Race
The teams now have months of experience with the 2026 regulations, making development one of the biggest stories of the second half of the season. Mercedes began the year with a clear advantage, but Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull will all be looking for ways to close the gap. A major upgrade could completely change the competition. The fastest car in March may not be the fastest car in November, and whoever understands the new regulations best could gain a huge advantage.
The Final Countdown
The season resumes at Zandvoort, before moving to Monza, Madrid, Baku, Singapore and Bahrain (hosted in Malaysia) followed by the busy run through the Americas and the final races in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. There is therefore plenty of opportunity for the championship to change hands. Antonelli resumes the season at the front with Hamilton hot on his heels. While McLaren have something to prove, and Verstappen has every reason to fight to the wire, the championship has the potential to open up massively.
Mercedes may have controlled the opening half, but the championship will ultimately be decided by how well they handle the pressure of being chased. With 12 races remaining, 2026 is far from over.
